The Mandalorian has taken Star Wars fans by storm by having a strong first season helmed by directors like Taika Waititi, Dave Filoni, Deborah Chow and Bryce Dallas Howard. Although Din Djarin is the main character of The Mandalorian, the most beloved one is The Child, who became an internet sensation faster than the season itself got to air. It generated thousands of memes, one of the most used one being the moment when The Child drinks out of a cup.

During the ATX Television Festival via Collider, Howard explained how her kids were instrumental in “directing” The Child and how they were a source of inspiration for the cup moment:

“My kids were on set pretty much every day. And even before we came to set, when it was the storyboards for the episode… when we were just conceiving of things, my daughter would come into the editing room and whenever Baby wasn’t on screen, she would lean over to me and be like, ‘Where’s Baby? Where’s Baby? Where’s Baby?

They [her children] needed to know Baby was safe. And from that a variety of moments came up that were constructed just because we wanted everyone to know Baby was safe.”

Bryce Dallas Howard

Bryce Dallas Howard also acknowledged executive producer’s Jon Favreau plan when it came to how important The Child’s safety was to younger viewers:

“Jon [Favreau] picked up on that, like, ‘Oh yeah — if the kid is wondering where Baby is, then we need to know where Baby is at all times.’… There was something with the kids where Baby was very real and Baby was in danger and they needed to see where Baby was at all times…”

The cup scene in Episode 4 is a show stealer, but it’s important to note how attentive people in the crew are when it comes to how kids perceive everything in Star Wars. It has always been a family franchise and even though maybe not all scenes in The Mandalorian are quite kid friendly, it was a given that children will be drawn to the already famous Baby Yoda, the name the internet gave to The Child.
