One of the great debates since the arrival of George Lucas’ space epic, Star Wars, has been whether his twin-Sun masterpiece is considered to be science fiction or fantasy.
Although, many great tales such as ‘Lord of the Rings’ or ‘Harry Potter’ are considered to be some of the greatest fantasy adventures of all-time, many consider Star Wars to be science fiction, stories like ‘War of the Worlds’ by H.G. Wells, and many other sci-fi classics.
However, some film industry vets like J. Scott McGee, deeply believe Star Wars to be fantasy, and here’s why:
Which side are you on?
Well, it appears that some of the comments could go either way, in terms of which side you choose, but their was one that really stuck out from the rest and quite honestly, it really made a convincing argument as to why McGee might be right on this one. Take a look:
It seems that Twitter user Chelsea (corseque) @northtgails really hit it out of the ballpark with this one. She went to great lengths to find a publication dated before the official 1977 release of Star Wars and in doing so, proving how publications such as this one, even before Star Wars official release, recognized it to be fantasy, not science fiction.
Apparently, Star Wars has been recognized as fantasy for decades! I, for one, had no clue. This is why I love Star Wars. Not only do great conversations like this happen all the time, but it really is a treat to dive deeper into unknown territory and learn from fellow fans and lovers of the galaxy far, far away.
