Supreme Leader Snoke’s Training of Kylo Ren on Dagobah

“There has been an awakening, have you felt it?”

These are the words that Supreme Leader Snoke said to Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens. During this time, Kylo Ren was still training with Snoke and although he was already making a name for himself as one of the most evil villains the galaxy has ever seen, still, his training was far from completion.

However, nothing is really mentioned of his time with Snoke before The Force Awakens and how Snoke used him from the beginning as a pawn to get to Luke Skywalker. Even his own father tried to warn him of Snoke’s abuse and manipulation.

“Snoke is using you for your power. When he gets what he wants, he’ll crush you. You know it’s true.”

Sadly, these are the last words we heard from Han Solo before his son, Ben (Kylo) murdered him in The Force Awakens. Although Han’s fatherly advice was maybe given to Ben a little too late, what he said was nothing but the truth. Unfortunately, at this point, Kylo was too unwilling to change and accept the truth because of Snoke’s manipulative effect.

Now, before we speak of Kylo’s journeying’s with Snoke before The Force Awakens, let’s jump to The Last Jedi where we were given a little more backstory to Ben’s path down the dark side.

In The Last Jedi, audiences were able to hear the truth from Luke of what happened when Ben was training at his Jedi temple.

“[Speaking of Ben Solo] I saw darkness. I sensed it building in him. I’d seen it in moments during his training. But then I looked inside, and it was beyond what I ever imagined. Snoke had already turned his heart. He would bring destruction, pain, death, and the end of everything I love because of what he will become. And for the briefest moment of pure instinct, I thought I could stop it. It passed like a fleeting shadow. And I was left with shame and with consequence. And the last thing I saw were the eyes of a frightened boy whose Master had failed him.”

Luke’s actions turned to be a huge misstep. For the briefest moment, Luke thought killing Ben would save the future and his students. But shortly after collecting his thoughts, Luke knew what he was doing was wrong. Unfortunately, after seeing Luke with his lightsaber ignited, Ben only saw betrayal in his master’s eyes and in turn, committed himself to the dark side and Snoke. However, before leaving the Jedi temple, now as Kylo Ren, and with the help of the Knights of Ren, killed all of Luke’s students and left to join forces with Snoke.

The story of Ben Solo’s evolution to Kylo Ren is a sad story, just like Emperor Palpatine’s manipulation of Anakin. And finally, we now have some more insight on the beginning of Kylo’s training with Supreme Leader Snoke, thanks to an upcoming Marvel comic Age of Resistance — Supreme Leader Snoke #1.

In this excerpt, Snoke takes Kylo Ren to a familiar place- Dagobah- the same where Luke Skywalker trained with Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back.

Snoke uses Kylo’s moment with Luke as the driving force for instilling hatred within Kylo. However, Snoke twists the truth and manipulates him through a lie. Not only is Snoke’s entire training based on a lie, but he’s abusive as well.

[Snoke speaking to Kylo about Luke Skywalker]

“If I had your uncle by my side instead of you, the galaxy would have been mine a long time ago.”

From the beginning, just like Palpatine, Snoke doesn’t care who his apprentice is. His whole goal of galactic domination can be done through anyone who is willing to serve him. He preys upon those who are weak, manipulates their strengths, and instills hatred within them to get what he wants. This is the same tactic that Emperor Palpatine used while training Darth Vader. He lied and blamed Darth Vader for Padme’s death; fueling Vader’s anger and hatred and solidifying Vader’s path down the dark side.

Although this is a sad tale to tell and explore, it will be interesting to see what other truths are revealed to us when Age of Resistance — Supreme Leader Snoke #1 is released on September 11th.
