The Mandalorian Will Be Something ‘No Star Wars Fan Has Ever Seen’

In a lawless world, no one knows what the next day could bring. It’s best to keep your blaster on you at all times unless you know you’re not an enemy of the Mandalorian.

Coming November 12th, a brand-new Disney+ original series will hit the small screen, bringing viewers a totally new Star Wars story that will be something “no Star Wars fan has ever seen.” The show is expected to take place after the fall of the Empire and during a period of utter chaos where crime and bounty hunters roam free. In reference to the Skywalker saga, the events of The Mandalorian will take place between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

Imagine a galaxy where crime is unchecked, and government is in a state of utter anarchy.

“It’s like after the Roman Empire falls, or when you don’t have a centralized shogun in Japan — and, of course, the Old West, when there wasn’t any government in the areas that had not yet been settled. Those are also cinematic tropes in films that originally inspired George Lucas to make Star Wars.”

Jon Favreau

As the brutality of crime syndicates and mercenaries expand, the Mandalorian will take his business wherever business will take him. While traveling across the galaxy, he’ll meet all kinds. But for right now, don’t expect to see any Jedi. Expect to see characters you’re not too familiar of- nor ones you’d want to have a drink with.

“I’ve always been curious what the other people in the cantina are up to. We’re digging really deep in the toy chest and pulling out the action figures that people were always curious about and were not quite in the center frame but have a lot of potential.”

Jon Favreau

The Mandalorian has a lot of potential. At least, that’s how Disney sees it. With a budget of around $100 million, so far, this is the largest budget for any show on the Disney+ platform. In fact, Disney already has so much confidence in its potential success that Season 2 will start filming this Fall. Not only is this show an expensive test to see if Star Wars can survive as a TV show, but it’s also a kick-starter for more future Star Wars shows such as the untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor, and the untitled Cassian Andor series starring Diego Luna.

It’s a daunting task to be the first live-action Star Wars TV show ever. The Mandalorian has a lot of ground to cover and audience-worthy potential that it needs to prove it can accumulate. However, with Pedro Pascal starring as the Mandalorian, I’m sure we’ll find that none of this to be a problem at all. Unfortunately, though, don’t expect his face much during the series- he’s no Boba Fett. And unlike Boba Fett, he’s not a clone, but an actual Mandalorian.

“…he’s operating in a much more unforgiving landscape where survival is difficult enough, let alone flourishing.”

Jon Favreau

But according to the Mandalorian, he tries to fight for what’s right.

“…but his duties could very much be in conflict with that — and doing the right thing has many faces.”

Pedro Pascal

Speaking of faces, Taika Waititi knows all about it. Besides sitting in the director’s chair for some of the show, he’s also playing an important faceless bounty hunter droid, IG-11.

“[IG-11 is] very innocent and naive and direct and doesn’t know about sarcasm and doesn’t know how to lie. It’s like a child with a gun.”

Taika Waititi

Other characters in The Mandalorian are Gina Carano as Cara Dune, a former Rebel Shock Trooper, Carl Weathers as Greef Carga, the leader of a bounty hunters’ organization, and Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon, a former governor of the Galactic Empire.

And of all of them, Moff Gideon is arguably the most dangerous and vile.

“He’s an Imperial remnant of a very fine officer who then switches to become sort of the guardian of the people. But what does [Moff Gideon] really want? This guy is going to be a big player because he has an idea of how to keep order.

Giancarlo Esposito

Moff Gideon may be the most cunning of all, but one character that was introduced that was failed to be mentioned was Omera, an all-new character played by Julia Jones.

With all of these new and exciting characters for Star Wars fans to study and enjoy, one thing that’s certain is that The Mandalorian will undoubtedly be something entirely new, refreshing, and thrilling.

“I’ve seen a lot of Star Wars. And what’s most exciting to me is that I am very confident we did some things — and fans will see things — that have never been seen before.”
