The Rise of Skywalker is finally here and maybe even more divisive than The Last Jedi. One gripe among many fans is the lack of Kelly Marie Tran’s character, Rose Tico. The character saw a significantly decreased amount of screen time from The Last Jedi. Disgruntled fans have accused J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio of limiting her character due to negative reactions from TLJ, but Terrio insists that isn’t the case.
“The last thing we were doing was deliberately trying to sideline Rose,” he told Awards Daily.
According to Terrio, he and Abrams wanted to tie Rose and Leia together, as an anchor to Carrie Fisher’s footage at the Resistance base. “We thought we couldn’t leave Leia at the base without any of the principals who we love.”
“A few scenes we’d written with Rose and Leia turned out to not meet the standard of photorealism we’d hoped for,” he elaborated. While these scenes didn’t make the cinematic cut, we can only hope to find them in the bonus material that comes with The Rise of Skywalker’s home release.
Tran received an outpouring of support from fans and fellow cast members earlier this year, especially during Star Wars Celebration in Chicago. During introductions at the panel for Episode IX, Tran received a standing ovation, a very heartwarming moment after so much negative backlash about her character after TLJ.
The future of Star Wars is wide open; maybe in the future, Rose Tico’s character can be explored in other satisfying ways.
