Rebels fans have been hungry for a sequel ever since we said goodbye to those beloved characters. With Ezra’s fate left unknown, and Sabine and Ahsoka on the hunt to find him, there’s a lot of potential for story material. According to an unknown source, we’re getting a chance to explore it.
On Reddit page r/StarWarsLeaks, a post was created full of wild rumors about what the Rebels sequel might contain. We have a vague release date of “late 2020,” and info that the first season is already in post-production. According to this source, it will take place during the height of the New Republic.
As we hoped, it should show Ahsoka and Sabine prepping to find Ezra in the Unknown regions of the galaxy. Rex will join them their journey as well. A side plot will involve Ahsoka working with the Kaminoans to stop Rex’s accelerated aging.
In the Unknown regions, Ezra and Thrawn will, of course, become allies over time. What other choice would they have? We will be “introduced to the Chiss Ascendancy, who are in the middle of a war with the Grysk.” For those who haven’t read the Thrawn novels, the Grysk are a powerful warrior race that mercilessly conquer entire planets and have been a longtime enemy of the Chiss. We will also meet Thrawn’s niece, who is a Force-sensitive Chiss, or a “sky-walker.”
A new character will be introduced, a member of the Rakata species, who will be a mentor figure to Ezra in the series. Described as an “Aztec amphibian God-king, with a cool Irish accent,” this character is a reformed tyrant, morally gray, and Force-sensitive. It will be interesting to see yet another mentor in Ezra’s Jedi development.
Armed with this information, Rebels fans have a lot to look forward to in 2020 – that is, if the information is accurate. I sure hope so – as someone who just finished her first watch of Rebels, I’m looking forward to more material and time with these characters. It was an unexpected delight, especially as a huge Clone Wars fan.
