On the Academy Awards red carpet this past weekend, Josh Horowitz for MTV News asked Rian Johnson, the writer and director of The Last Jedi, the question we’ve all been waiting to hear the answer to, “Your totally impartial view of The Rise of Skywalker. What was your reaction seeing the movie?”
Rian Johnson replied:
“I had a blast, man. Made me so proud. And seeing the heart and soul that JJ put into it, and seeing my friends who were in the movie, just like bring the whole thing to a conclusion.”Rian Johnson
This should elicit a huge sigh of relief from fans of both The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, as there has been plenty of unsubstantiated speculation that Rian Johnson felt elements of his film in the Skywalker Saga had been retconned by JJ’s final installment. But this appears to have been an unnecessary concern, as Rian felt that seeing The Rise of Skywalker “…as a Star Wars fan, it was a really special experience.”
This of course matches Rian’s attitude back in April 2019 during another interview with Horowitz, when Rian was asked if he would be bothered if JJ retconned Rey’s parentage. His response then was, “He can do… like I said, man, I want to let go of all my expectations. I want to sit back. I want to be entertained. I want to be surprised. I want to be thrilled. I want him to do stuff that I wasn’t expecting him to do.”
Also on the red carpet this past weekend with Horowitz was Kelly Marie Tran, who was asked, “Were you surprised why what the fans were saying and how they were bummed that maybe some [Rose] stuff was cut?” Much of Kelly’s scenes on the Resistance base were cut due to issues with Carrie Fisher’s footage. Kelly’s response to Horowitz should put fans of Kelly (and Rose) at ease:
“Last Jedi was my first movie… So, I think I’m finally starting to realize that when you’re in something of that caliber, there’s so many people working to…make something out of love. And, no matter what you do, there’s always going to be people that aren’t happy with that. But I think that the best lesson I’ve learned is just to have fun and be present in the moment. So…I’m really grateful that I got to be a part of it.”Kelly Marie Tran
Horowitz went on to ask, “You were satisfied, you were happy enough with how your part ended up?”
“I mean, I think I’m really just amazed at the way that JJ was able sort of wrap up all these incredible stories. There were so many characters…and at the end of the day, I got to be a part of something bigger than me, and that’s really special.”Kelly Marie Tran
And that positive outlook is one of the reasons Kelly (and Rose) are loved by so many.
Lastly, Horowitz spoke with Oscar Isaac on the mixed opinions on The Rise of Skywalker, asking, “How are you feeling about the reception to Rise of Skywalker? I mean, obvious extreme on both ends as always. Were you surprised?”
With a shake of his head, Oscar answered, “Not really. You know, it was the same on [The Last Jedi] as well. You know, people—it means a lot to people, so.”
Asked if he felt any of the criticism has been justified, Oscar joked:
“Yeah, look. Was there was crying in the shower? Yes!”Oscar Isaac
Horowitz came back with: “Well, that’s normal for you. That’s a Saturday night,” to which Oscar replied, “Exactly! That’s how I do it, you know?”
