Project Luminous: The High Republic – Everything You Need to Know

“The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things. Until…”

…Now, the wait is over! The highly anticipated and clandestine Star Wars project, Project Luminous has finally been exposed. It’s going to be a storytelling adventure for the ages, so strap yourselves in.

Project Luminous, now known as the High Republic Star Wars era, kicks off August of 2020 – and will encompass a wide variety of media venues, including novels, short-stories, comics, Manga adaptations, and much more.

Development for the High Republic began all the way back in 2014, just two years after Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm from the Maker himself, George Lucas. Current Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy encouraged the Lucasfilm Story Group to be bold with Project Luminous. They took her words to heart and went where no storytelling group had gone before. The production value poured into the High Republic era is comparable to the pre-production of big budget films – with concept art, story boards, visual graphics, the works.

Big shot executives also put together quite the crew, with a Jedi Master-like collection of authors tasked with penning the peak of the High Republic era:

  • Claudia Gray
  • Justina Ireland
  • Daniel José Older
  • Cavan Scott
  • Charles Soule

Publishing will now be at the forefront of Star Wars storytelling, said Lucasfilm’s James Waugh.

“We hope that Project Luminous will bring in a new generation of fans, but also appeal to those who have spent their lives following a Galaxy Far, Far Away.”

Two themes that will be the driving force of the High Republic era:

“What scares the Jedi?” And, the classic line uttered by Obi-Wan Kenobi: “For over a thousand generations the Jedi were the guardians of peace and justice”

The High Republic era is set 200 years before the Skywalker Saga. “The Jedi as we’ve always wanted to see them.” Think of the High Republic as (Jedi)Knights of the Round Table meets Star Wars.

The High Republic is a time of peace and prosperity. Also, a time of galactic growth, with new hyperspace routes expanding throughout the galaxy. Lurking around the corner within the unknown regions of space is a tremendous threat, one that terrifies even the mighty Jedi. This threat is significantly different from the antagonists of the films and will be like nothing we’ve ever seen before within a galaxy far, far away. Space Vikings, known as the Nihil, are a group of marauders, with the resources of a unified threat, while carrying individual motives. Think of it as, “Sid Vicious taking over the galaxy,” says author Justina Ireland.

The Nihil will disrupt the keepers of the peace, and force the Jedi into action, starting with these promising stories:

“Light of the Jedi” is now available for pre-order and debuts on August 25th, 2020, just days before Star Wars Celebration 2020 in Anaheim, California.

Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule. Will establish the era and kick off the High Republic era.

Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland (Middle Grade novel, Disney Lucasfilm Press / available for pre-order). The main character is a sixteen-year old Jedi Knight, who would rather be studying about adventure, than amidst it. The Force has different plans for this young Jedi…

The High Republic comic will be written by Cavan Scott.

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures by Daniel José Older (IDW Publishing comic book series).

Star Wars: The High Republic: Into the Dark by Claudia Gray (Young Adult novel, Disney Lucasfilm Press / available for pre-order) follows a Padawan who craves adventure and features a captain-like character inspired by Matthew McConaughey – Hey, hey, hey!

This is just the beginning, with these stories only phase one of Project Luminous. Could these stories be leading up to a High Republic live-action Star Wars film? Always in motion the future is, but the trajectory appears to be moving in that very direction.
