The Mandalorian Gets Another MCU Director

After last week’s saddening news where James Mangold publicly denied any involvement in season 2 of The Mandalorian, a new rumor has surfaced that the show has gotten a new MCU director to take over the directorial helm for some of the show.

According to Charles Murphy from Murphy’s Multiverse:

“Peyton Reed is set to direct 2 episodes of the second season of the Disney Plus streaming series, The Mandalorian and Taika Waititi is once again contributing to the series!”

What seems to stand out most from this news is that Taika Waititi is returning to The Mandalorian, who previously directed the season 1 finale of the space western. After his directorial debut, rumors and speculation were swirling around the Star Wars community that Waititi had been in talks to direct a future Star Wars film. Soon after, those rumors were quickly shot down by Waititi.

Waititi is no stranger to the MCU, as well as Peyton Reed, who also has dabbled in that universe when he directed both Ant-Man movies. With the likes of another MCU all-star entering the realm of Star Wars, it’s no wonder that MCU President, Kevin Feige, will be producing his own Star Wars film in the future. A lot of all-star talent can be found from the MCU, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see more of them in the future of the Star Wars franchise.

However, with Peyton Reed, his involvement in the Star Wars franchise seems to go back farther than we think, according to Murphy:

“…The seeds for his potential involvement may go as far back as November of 2018 when he, along with Waititi and Joe and Anthony Russo visited Favreau on the set during production of the shows’ first season, pictured below.”

“Favreau and Reed have a working relationship dating as far back as 2006 when the former co-starred in Reed’s comedy, The Break-Up, and have certainly had a chance to exchange notes given their ongoing relationships with Marvel Studios. Last season, 3 directors (Deborah ChowRick Famuyiwa and Dave Filoni) helmed two shows each, so it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibilities that Reed could fit into that same mold.”

A great many things are up in the air right now when it comes to the future of the Star Wars franchise. Until Disney/Lucasfilm officially announces any such news, take this rumor with a grain of salt. Just remember, nothing is out of the realm of possibility.
