We know Star Wars actors are as passionate about the films as fans are. They love their characters, and they love the story. In fact, Oscar Isaac was so invested in Poe, he convinced J.J. Abrams to do the touching scene between Poe and Leia as she lay on her deathbed.
Leia was Dameron’s mentor, and he needed her presence in a moment of doubt. Isaac thought it was important to see that interaction, telling Abrams, “I think it’d be great to just see a moment that Poe has with Leia. Even just a moment for him to say goodbye.”
This is found in the special features of The Rise of Skywalker. It’s cool to know Abrams is open to working with actors and taking their suggestions. You’re only as good as the people around you.
And of course, including as much Leia as possible was probably an easy choice. Including her was one of the biggest challenges faced by Abrams, and this scene gave him another opportunity to show Leia, and Carrie Fisher, that love, even if she wasn’t physically in the scene.
There was another added bonus of including Lando, as well. We got the chance to see him weigh in on the importance of friendship, and togetherness, the spirit of the original trilogy.
So kudos to Oscar Isaac for pushing for this scene – it was a beautiful moment the film needed to tap into our hearts.
