Sam Witwer Was Almost Kanan Jarrus

Sam Witwer, voice of Darth Maul on The Clone Wars, spoke recently with Star Wars Holocron about his role in the show’s final season. He also served up some new trivia about the animated show Star Wars Rebels.

While he is master of voicing villains in the franchise, Rebels might have brought him to the Light side. According to Witwer, he was originally cast to play the secret Jedi Knight, Kanan Jarrus.

“Rebels, for a second according to a few people at Lucasfilm, was called ‘The Sam Show’ because I was Kanan. And then they found Freddie [Prinze Jr] after they heard Freddie’s audition. I’ve got to be honest, I had a certain take on the character, and what I was doing was not better than what Freddie was doing. What Freddie was doing was better than what I was doing in my opinion, and I realized that when I saw it. I was like, wow, this guy is absolutely that character. I think that’s the way to go.”

We love Prinze Jr.’s portrayal of Kanan, one of the most beloved characters of the series. But now fans can try and imagine how Witwer might have done it differently. They’re both talented actors, so you can’t really go wrong!
