Captain, My Captain!

I fell in love for the first time when I was nine years old. I would rush home from Mrs. Comeau’s fourth grade class, turn on our black and white console TV, and plop myself down at the feet of my very first screen crush: Aldo Ray.

Aldo Ray was the actor from the 50’s and 60’s that I admired most. At the time, both my father and his brother were in the US Navy, and three of my uncles from my mom’s side of the family were in the US Army.

In the movies I watched the most, Aldo was not the STAR. He was the loyal, hard-working underling that did all the actual work and ‘really important’ things that the STAR usually thought up. I have to laugh; I can’t really remember the plotlines of those stories, just the impressions. But Aldo was my hero.

Captain Rex is my new Aldo Ray. Whether in The Clone Wars, or Rebels, Captain Rex has become the character I find easiest to admire. He is loyal, hard-working, and smart. And when push comes to Jedi shove, Rex has the greatest of human qualities: kindness. No matter which General is in charge, what grand ambitious plan is put forward, Captain Rex and his men will be there to do the hard work and heavy lifting.

Just like so many other good men in my life. I love you Captain Rex! Thank you for your service.
