Mark Hamill Is Retiring His Lightsaber For Good

The Skywalker saga has ended, and Mark Hamill is putting away his lightsaber for good.

Hamill spoke with Entertainment Weekly about whether he could see himself reprising his role as Luke Skywalker. Hamill said his time as Luke was officially over. “I had a beginning, middle, and end…My farewell was in Episode IX and it was bittersweet. I love all those people and I certainly have affection for George and the character he created.”

The actor wants to give others the opportunity to play in the Star Wars universe.  “I’m full of gratitude for what it has given me and my career but I don’t want to be greedy. There are still so many more stories to tell and so many great actors to tell them, they don’t need me.”

He believes The Mandalorian is a step in the right direction for the galaxy. “I think they have a wonderful advantage on The Mandalorian in that it’s economical storytelling. They don’t have the burden of delivering a gigantic special effects extravaganza like the films had to do,” he elaborated. “…with The Mandalorian, they can concentrate more on the characters and the storytelling. I think it’s excellent.”

While we’ll certainly miss him in our Star Wars stories, it has been wonderful to experience Mark Hamill’s work as Luke. Let’s look forward to the adventures ahead!
