Today marks 40 years since the release of The Empire Strikes Back, and fans all around the world are reflecting on what the film means to them.
Amidst the celebration, the official Star Wars Twitter released a video of behind-the-scenes footage from the film. Check out the Tweet below.
The short clip features sound bytes from George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, as well as the original cast, including Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Harrison Ford. Billy Dee Williams and Anthony Daniels make an appearance as well.
Lucas can be heard saying the film is “much more of a tragedy.”
“…A story is developing…the characters are becoming more serious,” he explained.
Kershner, Lucas, and Fisher discuss how the film is more fantasy than sci-fi, which is a fair point – the majority of the movie is focused on the mystical aspects of the Force.
It’s a nice look at the past, and at what this film meant to those involved. As Mark Hamill says, “it all depends on this one” – the fate of Star Wars relied heavily on the success of Empire.
